Sale Band on a High Note

Gippsland Times 28 February 2006
SALE CITY Band enthusiastic president Ken Garner emphasises that more has been achieved by the band committee in the past five years than in any similar period in band history.

The evidence?
A new band room worth $100,000, new striking red and dark blue uniforms, replacement of many band instruments, and a waiting list of juniors wanting to join.

President for nine years but a bandsman for 20, dairyman Ken Garner is not comparing the past five years with those gone and the efforts of previous committees, it's
just that in the past few years the band has brought achievement to fruition.

How old is the band? Ken Garner isn't sure. Early records were accidentally burnt but the committee believes the band to be about a century old.

Recent significant events include performing at the Melbourne Royal Show, promoting Sale as one of the slate's top provincial centres, winning third place in the Victoria
Band League (D grade) Melbourne championships, and third from eight competitors in the Traralgon championships.

The Melbourne presentation was bandmaster Ray Jago's last performance. Joining 10 years ago and having been bandmaster for five years, he retired, but will continue to play
with the band.

Ray Jago and another staunch member, Bob Wallace, band secretary from l964 to the early 70's (president for a year) were made life members. The honor was bestowed by former bandmaster
and local schoolteacher, Neil McPherson.
