Sale Arts Society
Sale Band Hosts A Pleasant Evening was spent by members of the Sale Arts Society on Tuesday evening last when they were entertained by members of the Sale City Band at the supper room of the Mechanics Institute.
Opening the evening Mr. G. Parkin, the band's representative to the Society said that they were pleased to present the evening for the members and hoped that all would enjoy the playing.
Bandmaster James explained to members the difference between the old brass instruments and the new silver ones of which Sale City Band is one. As well as the fingering of the valves, lipping of the mouthpiece plays a very important part in the producing of the various tones, he said.
A demonstration of the various instruments then took place, each delivering the same tone and yet each distinctly different from its predecessor. In the band were first and second cornets, tenor horns, baritones, sliding trombones euphoniums, bass and drums.
The bandsmen were in uniform. Bandmaster James referred to the excellent work of Ray Jago, cornetist, who came third in the Victorian Band League competition recently. This was quite an achievement against such opposition.
The bandsmen played "The Holy City" with Ray Jago as leading cornetist. Further items rendered by the band were a descriptive patrol, Victorian Rifles and the evening concluded with a paraphrase from Faust.
Mr. Viccars on behalf of the Sale Arts Society thanked the band for the pleasant evening they had contributed also the ladies committee of the band for providing such an excellent supper.
